The server encountered an error trying to edit the virtual disk

Unable to expand dynamically expading hyper-v VHDX data drive

We have a Hyper V server with one of the virtual servers having a dynamically expanding hyper-v VHDX data drive that is almost full. If we try and write more data to the drive it is not expanding.

If we try and expand the drive in Hyper-V Manager it says The server encountered an error trying to edit the virtual disk. Failed to resize the virtual disk.

I thought that dynamically expanding drives were suppose to expand automatically when they needed more space but this is not happening, and there is plenty of space on the host server to allow this to increase.

Please can someone tell me what I have to do to increase the space on this virtual drive?

An Dyanmically Expanding VHDX has a limit that you have set when you created the VM or the Disk. So if say you setup a dynamic VHDX to have 300 GB, it will grow up to 300 GB but will not expand after that until you expand the size. So basically you need to edit the disk to go up to another desired size, so you can use the GUI or PowerShell

What is your HyperV version and for the VM what Generation and OS is it?

Dynamically expanding disks will expand up to the max size allocated in the Hyper V Manager, but within the guest it doesn’t actually expand, Windows thinks it has the full size. I assume it is within Windows where you see the disk is almost full. Have you tried compacting the VHDX file to reclaim the unused space? If not, check out this article from Altaro https://www.altaro.com/hyper-v/compact-hyper-v-virtual-disks-vhdx/ Opens a new window

After compacting it, try expanding it again. Here’s a decent article about expanding a vhdx in case you are interested.

In addition to the notes above, I believe you cannot perform any disk operations if checkpoints (snapshots) exist.

Its Server 2016 and latest generation (installed this year), so all latest generation. The host is on a GUI so I am not using powershell, but using the GUI.

I just need to figure out now why it is erroring when trying to increase the size through Hyper V and how to get around this.

Remember to go into the guest operating system disk manager and extend the volume there too.

Typically, we like to expand the VHDX while it is online. That’s pretty cool. But, it appears that 2016 is having some issues with that.

So, have you tried shutting down the VM and expanding the disk off-line?

In your shoes, I’d try exporting the VM, import it elsewhere, and play around with the disk expansion until I got it right.

Interesting but so far extending a drive online in server 2016 has worked well without an issue. Also that’s why you have backups for.

The server encountered an error trying to edit the virtual disk

Question

I’m trying to merge a bunch of snapshot avhd’s manually as Hyper-V (beta) just doesn’t do it for some reason, so I copied all avhd’s as well as the vhd to an W2K8R2 and renamed them to vhd. Using the «Edit Disk»-functionality offers me to reconnect the files, selecting the next youngest brings an error
«The server encountered an error trying to edit the virtual disk.
Reconnecting the virtual disk to its parent disk failed.
The operation was passed an invalid parameter.»

Did anybody already know how to get these files merged?

Answers

the snapshots were already deleted, but the merge didn’t jump in. I wasn’t able to install 950050, it brought an error that even google never heard of, probably because it runs on a german OS.

Anyway, I figured that the chain was broken for some reason, after a manual rebuilt I was able to merge the avhd’s with the «edit disk» function.

Thanks for your help.

Hyper-V should merge the snapshots in just fine — it has been working since the time of the beta. But it will not happen until the VM is powered off, then you must wait for the process to kick in. It is not instant.

The error that you have almost sounds as if you have a disk out of sequence in the merge.

Did you try exporting the VM to local storage, copy the exported folder to the new host, import the VM, then delete the snapshots?

Also, if you are still running the Hyper-V beta (this implies that you never installed patch 950050)

I would suggest that you power down your VMs, and then patch up your host, then try the merge again.

The server encountered an error trying to edit the virtual disk

Вопрос

This is a Server 2016 Hypervisor and single server 2016 guest VM.

It looks like the backup software has been creating checkpoints that have failed to merge for about a week now. There are multiple .avhdx files for the VM in the file system but the Hyper-V UI shows no checkpoints exist.

In addition the Get-VMSnapshot command in Powershell agrees with the UI — no checkpoints:

However, checking the machine settings in Hyper-V manager, I find that the hard drive is pointing to one of the differencing disks and the message «Edit is not available because checkpoints exist for this virtual machine.»

To make matters worse, I have no idea how to do a manual merge for these avhdx files because both the root/parent vhdx and TWO of the child avhdx files show the exact same date modified stamp — the time I shut down the VM last night. So I am not sure which avhdx is last in the chain.

Hyper-V is currently pointing to the differencing disk ending in B2C2 above. The one ending in CAC5 looks like it was created earlier (base on the .mrt file) but has the same stamp.

Also — at this point in the write-up I restarted the hypervisor, and when it came back up, the virtual machine had disappeared from Hyper-V:

So I went through the process of re-importing and registering in place:

This threw an error saying it failed, but the VM now re-appears in HyperV manager anyway. VERY strange.

I have started the VM again and will disable backup so no more checkpoints are created, but I really need to get this resolved quickly as the disk only has 116 GB of free space remaining and I do not want it to get so full that I cannot merge these checkpoints.
